Millions and millions of phone subscribers used to be drawn to AT&T due to the iPhone 4. However those heady days are slipping away as most of the iPhone 4’s being sold by AT&T are now being sold as trade-ups from its existing customer base without iPhone contracts.
This phenomenon is borne out by the extremely low level of take-aways from other carriers without the iPhone 4. Which totaled just 62,000 net new subscribers on contract-based plans during the first quarter of this year. Which is startling considering that in many previous quarters that total constantly stayed above a million net new subscribers from other carriers without iPhone contracts.
The difference is the dilution of the once secure iPhone 4 customer loyalty base plus everyone wanting the iPhone 4 but only AT&T Wireless had it. Verizon Wireless which started selling iPhone 4’s with iPhone contracts on February 10th seems to have ended AT&T’s broad three and one-half years of exclusivity for iPhone contracts.
Even more evidence of AT&T losing ground rests in these numbers: AT&T said it activated 3.6 million iPhone 4’s which was an increase from the 2.7 million for the same time last year. However, subscribers new to AT&T accounted for only 23.1% of the iPhone model and down from about 33.4% a year ago. Sure the other have contracts, but not iPhone 4 contracts.
Verizon Wireless does not seem to be taking lots of AT&T iPhone contract customers as had been predicted. AT&T Wireless was able to announce that its level of subscribers cancelling service seemed about the same as last year, including iPhone contracts, which was a good sign for the Dallas-based company.
Time will tell as to whether the Verizon iPhone 4 will have a lasting and negative impact on the subscription and retention level for AT&T iPhone contracts. Mainly because, AT&T tied up a lot of subscribers with two-year iPhone contracts along with a major cash penalty for leaving early. Even so, Lindner does not expect the rate of subscribers leaving his company to rise for this year.
Verizon Communications which controls Verizon Wireless through its 55% ownership stake will be reporting its first-quarter results soon and we assume AT&T will be watching closely.
All of these changes and battles among industry smart-phone leaders may reduce the many benefits consumers of the iPhone 4 have been enjoying.
